Integration of Library Materials into Angel CMS

Webbased Video Tutorials for Grace College Website

ANGEL Learning Management Suite is a commercial course management system used by Cornerstone University under the name “Odyssey.”  The system is heavily used by distance education and core curriculum courses, and all faculty are required to at least post their course syllabuses into the product.  In developing a group repository for the library, I have been able to link library instructional materials to every academic class, such as bibliographic instruction handouts and PowerPoint presentations, as well as including direct links to library subject guide pages.  A direct search box to our OPAC is also in each course page.

LibraryPrize

LibraryPrize was a library outreach event based off of ArtPrize, an interactive art festival hosted in a three square mile area of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Students were asked to bring in various creative works, which were voted on by the campus community, with cash prizes awarded to the winners.  In overseeing this event, I used traditional promotional tools (posters, press releases, and campus e-mails) along with a variety of online social networking sites (Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr).

Miller Library Website Overhaul

Webbased Video Tutorials for Grace College Website

In 2009 Cornerstone University’s website went through a major redesign process.  Seeing key improvements which could be made to Miller Library’s website, I was asked to lead a three member library website committee.  This committee developed a website project plan detailing the library website’s mission, goals, and content structure.  In conjunction with the institution’s marketing department (which changed leadership three times in this process) and an outside design firm we were able to improve the library website’s general information architecture and implement several Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 tools.

Webbased Instructional Tutorials

The How do I… section of the Morgan Library website allows library patrons to view short instructional videos on using the library website, online catalog, and popular databases. For this project I used Camtasia Studio version 4, from which I did initial screen recordings, followed by editing and audio overlay. Once the videos were completed I produced/saved them as Windows Media Player (WMP) files, and then uploaded them to YouTube. Videos prepared for the 2007-08 school year each received three to four hundred views.

Winona Railroad Collection

Winona Railroad Collection

The Winona Railroad Collection is a ContentDM based digital library covering the history of the Winona Railroad interurban railroad through pictures, postcards, and media articles. For this project I oversaw the digital scanning of all materials (over nine hundred total items), developed the metadata structure for ContentDM, and assisted Morgan Library’s director (an expert in the history of the Winona Railroad) with inserting metadata for each item. I have also assisted with developing and participating in Winona Railroad presentations.

Federated Database Searching

Metalib

Metalib is a federated search product from Ex Libris which connects multiple databases into one search platform. For this project I setup each Morgan Library database into the MetaLib KnowledgeBase, customized the stylesheet and page templates to match the current design of the Morgan Library website, and established quickset categories.

Print Journal Listings in SFX

Grace’s SFX Local Holdings

SFX is a linking product from Ex Libris which connects full text material listings of multiple databases. While Morgan Library was using SFX, it did not have its print journal holdings in SFX, which included many non-electronic titles. For this project I developed and formatted a list of Morgan Library’s journal holdings with ISSN’s, and imported it into a newly made SFX ‘target’ which acts as a online database listing.
